Lacrosse Tournament Returns to Vail

The Vail Lacrosse Tournament will return to the Vail Valley this summer nearly doubling the local population over three days this June. Known as the highest altitude youth tournament in the country; the family-friendly competition draws approximately 4,000 spectators, players and families to the Vail Valley.

The original trendsetter, The Vail Lacrosse Tournament laid down its roots in the Valley in 1995, just as the game was picking up name recognition and momentum nationally. One of the few tournaments of it’s kind in the central plains; the event draws participants from around the country to compete while taking in the gorgeous Vail landscape and all of the activities the area has to offer.

No stranger to the Colorado market, DU was one of the first colleges to adopt a Lacrosse team and is long celebrated for having one of the topped ranked teams in the US. The university even devoted a 2,500 capacity facility to the sport in 2005, which played host to the very first NCAA Tournament game West of the Mississippi River when Denver defeated Villanova 13-10 on May 15, 2011 hosting the largest crowd in the history of the stadium.

Not just a spectators sport, Lacrosse is noted as one of the fastest growing sports in youth and high school divisions by the The National Federation of State High School Associations’ participation report, with an estimated 3 million players participating in organized teams 2014 alone. With over 25 countries embracing the sport, it’s only foreseeable that the game will continue to grow in the US — with the Vail Valley leading the way for youth and high school divisions nationally. Families and fans of Lacrosse travel to the area with the opportunity to stay for a full week and participate in the Vail Lacrosse Shoot Out, which occurs just after the competition.

Now celebrating 23 years, the annual competition will return on June 19-21 with games scheduled in Vail, Eagle-Vail, Avon, and Edwards.
